Hallmarking is a legal requirement in the UK for items made from precious metals e.g. silver, gold, platinum and palladium. With regards to silver, an item of silver jewellery must be hallmarked if it contains above 7.78g of silver and is sold as silver. In addition to a hallmark (struck by an independent Assay Office), there will also be a "maker's" mark, denoting the maker of the item of jewellery, and a fineness mark denoting the silver content of the metal used. For example, Sterling Silver jewellery will have a fineness mark of "925" (denoting 92.5% of silver). Additional optional marks can include the year when the item was hallmarked and an internationally recognised hallmarking convention mark. Items of silver below 7.78g can also be hallmarked but it is not compulsory and, because of the expense of hallmarking, is not a common practice. Should you wish however to have a lower weight item hallmarked please get in touch when placing your order and we can give you an estimate of the cost of hallmarking your item(s) and delivery. Click below to find out more about the UK's hallmarking requirements.
At Sleek Silver Jewellery, ALL items of jewellery, except for the very small and/or very delicate, will carry our maker's mark <SKS> AND a fineness mark e.g. 925 for Sterling Silver or 999 for fine silver. If the item of jewellery contains 7.78g of silver or above, it will also carry a hallmark struck by the Birmingham Assay Office, in compliance with the UK Hallmarking Act. The hallmark of the Birmingham Assay Office is denoted by an "anchor".
To keep hallmarking costs as low as possible for customers, orders are normally batched together before sending to the Assay Office. Therefore, depending upon when your order was placed, this could result in a small delay if your item requires to be hallmarked, and you will be notified if ths is the case.
Sleek Silver Jewellery only uses the highest quality of silver in its jewellery which is sourced only from respected bullion suppliers who are REACH compliant, i.e. that the silver they supply is far below the REACH regulations which limit the levels of nickel, cadmium and lead in jewellery. Therefore for all intent and purposes, the silver which is used in Sleek Silver jewellery can be considered hypoallergenic. However, if you have a particular sensitivity to Sterling Silver, commonly due to it's higher copper content, then please get in touch as usually the piece can be reproduced using Argentium silver, a silver alloy which has a far lower copper content.
Sleek Silver is committed to being environmentally friendly. We do this by:
Only using 100% recycled silver sourced from respected bullion suppliers.
Recycling silver ourselves
Collecting silver waste and sending it away to be remelted into silver
Only using packaging that is eco-friendly.
There are a number of simple things you can do to keep your silver jewellery in tip top condition:
Only clean your jewellery with mild soap and warm water. Use a soft toothbrush for hard to reach areas and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
When not wearing your jewellery protect it by keeping it in in a soft lined jewellery box.
Avoid letting your jewellery come into contact with harsh detergents, bleaches and chlorinated water.
Use a silver polishing cloth or silver polish solution to maintain a mirror finish.
